Expert Care for Your Chest & Lungs

At the Institute for Thoracic Surgery in Miami, Florida, led by Mark Dylewski, MD, our practice is dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive surgical management of adult diseases of the chest, lungs, mediastinum, and esophagus. Our philosophy is grounded in the principle that patients deserve highly specialized thoracic care delivered with precision, clinical expertise, and compassion, while incorporating the most advanced minimally invasive technologies whenever clinically appropriate.

A central focus of our practice is minimally invasive robotic pulmonary and esophageal surgery, including procedures performed using the Dylewski Technique, an approach developed by Dr. Dylewski more than two decades ago. With continued advances in robotic technology, Dr. Dylewski has incorporated the latest DV5 and da Vinci SP® robotic platforms into his surgical practice, enabling complex thoracic procedures to be performed through multiple small 8mm incisions or a single access incision in appropriately selected patients. This approach is intended to minimize surgical trauma to the chest wall while providing the surgeon with enhanced visualization, dexterity, and precision.

Our practice performs a broad range of advanced thoracic procedures, including lobectomy, segmentectomy, thymectomy, sleeve resection, pulmonary nodule resection, chest wall tumors, pects repairs and complex esophageal surgery for both benign and malignant disease. Each surgical plan is carefully tailored to the patient's underlying disease, anatomy, overall health, and long-term treatment objectives. Whenever appropriate, we seek to achieve the most effective oncologic or functional result through the least invasive surgical approach.

We provide comprehensive surgical care for a wide spectrum of thoracic conditions, including early-stage and locally advanced lung cancer, mesothelioma, thymic and other mediastinal malignancies, and esophageal cancer. Our expertise also encompasses benign disorders of the chest and aerodigestive tract, including achalasia, esophageal strictures, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), and hiatal hernias.

For patients with locally advanced or complex malignancies, we emphasize multidisciplinary treatment planning. Our thoracic surgeons work closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, radiologists, and other specialists to develop an integrated treatment strategy. When appropriate, systemic therapy—including chemotherapy and immunotherapy—and radiation therapy may be incorporated before surgery to optimize tumor response and facilitate definitive surgical treatment. This multidisciplinary approach allows treatment to be individualized according to the biology and stage of each patient's disease in an effort to optimize the treatment to achieve a surgical cure of the patients disease.

Every patient presents with unique anatomy, medical circumstances, disease characteristics, and treatment goals. Our objective is to provide an accurate diagnosis and a comprehensive, individualized treatment plan that integrates multidisciplinary cancer care, advanced surgical technology, and extensive expertise in thoracic surgery. The evolution of minimally invasive and robotic techniques has expanded the ability to perform many complex thoracic procedures through smaller incisions, with the potential to reduce surgical trauma and support postoperative recovery.

At the Institute for Thoracic Surgery, we are committed to combining advanced technology with thoughtful, individualized surgical care. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition involving the chest, lungs, mediastinum, or esophagus, we invite you to schedule a consultation with our thoracic surgery team.
